Blessed in a Different Way

When Jesus opens His Sermon on the Mount, He turns the world’s idea of blessing upside down. Blessed are not the powerful, the influential, the confident, or the successful, but blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers . . . Jesus declares that God’s favor rests on those who know their need, who hunger for righteousness, and who choose love even when it costs them. The Beatitudes remind us that God’s kingdom does not reward self-sufficiency but humble trust, not domination but mercy, not comfort but faithfulness. In following Jesus, we discover that true blessing is not found in what we achieve, but in who we are becoming in Him through grace and love and the power of God’s Spirit.  Ultimately, we discover God’s blessing that we might also share God’s blessing and be a blessing to others.

Prayer Starter
Gracious God, shape our hearts by the values of your kingdom. Teach us humility, deepen our mercy, and strengthen our desire for what is true and right. May we live as people who reflect the blessing and hope of Christ in a broken and often hurting world. Amen.
