Fire & Anvil

Sometimes ago I visited a colonial re-enactment with my daughter.  There were people of all ages dressed in costumes from the colonial period working in areas such as trapping, carpentry, cooking and baking, and the area which intrigued me most, which was metal working, where a man hammered burning hot metal into useful tools.  I thought of the imagery in scripture that refers to how God sometimes molds and fashions us in the same way.
I invite you to imagine for a moment that you are watching a Master craftsman at work crafting a piece of metal.  You feel the heat of the furnace as the craftsman puts the metal in the fire, burning off impurities and refining it until it is red hot.  Then he puts it on the table and begins to hammer and shape it on the workbench.  The hammering continues until out of the block of metal comes a work of beauty, strength and usefulness.
Life is full of trials and tests—personally, spiritually, relationally.  They test who we are and they test our mettle to see what we are made of.  God uses tests in our life to refine us and strengthen us so that we can grow personally and spiritually.   Know that wherever you are in the tests of life, that God is with you and will see you through.  Most of all know that no matter how hot the trials or how painful the hammering, the Master craftsman loves you and has you secure in the palm of His hand, and He is at work in your life sculpting a work of great beauty and usefulness.

(scripture of the week)
Consider it pure joy, my sisters and brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything….
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. (James 1.2-4,12)

(prayer of the week)
Lord, help me to trust you in the tests and trials of life.  Help me to look to you for strength and grant me wisdom for understanding.  I trust you to see me through, in Christ’s name, amen.

Game Plan

8/21/2025

Football pre-season is here and the regular season will be starting soon.  Do you have a favorite team?  A favorite coach?   We all watch with great sense of expectancy and hope at the start of a new season as we watch our team take the field.  Every player and sports fan knows that the team needs a game plan in order to do well.  And every player knows that they need to follow the coach’s game plan in order to do well and succeed.  Our lives need a game plan, too.  And the best game plan comes from God who has a plan and purpose for our lives.  It is a plan and purpose we can trust because God loves us and cares about us and, come what may, God will see us through.  Hear these words of hope and comfort from Jeremiah:

(verse of the week)
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.  I will be found by you” (Jeremiah 29.11-13)

(prayer of the week)
Lord, thank you that you have a plan and a purpose for my life.  Thank you that your plans have a hope and a blessed future for me.  Help me to follow your guidance and give me strength and courage to follow your plan and purpose in all of life, through your power and to your glory, amen.

Have a blessed week!—Pastor TJ

Reach for the Stars

8/14/2025

Reach for the stars and keep your feet grounded in love -- it is a great adage and a great goal for all of life.  Paul challenges us to be rooted and established in Christ's love and that relationship will help us grow strong and become fruitful in all we do.  We can keep growing in the love of Christ through all of life, and have confidence that our relationship to God gives us a firm foundation to use our gifts and talents to pursue great dreams that serve others and honor God.  Reach for the stars and keep your feet rooted and grounded in love --and hold on to the hand of the Lord who loves you and will be with you always.  Open your heart to God's awesome love...and trust God to take you places you never even dreamed of... then fasten your seat belt for all the thrills, adventure, and joy of a lifetime!

(Verse of the week)
I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. (Ephesians 3.17,18)

(Prayer of the week)
Gracious God, thank you for the gift of this day and the gift of life itself.  Thank you for the gifts and talents you have given me.  Help me to keep my life grounded in your love and help me reach for the stars and be all that I can be.  In everything I do may others see your love in me through your grace and to your glory.  Amen!

Have a great week! –Pastor TJ

Summer

8/7/2025

I hope you have taken time to enjoy your summer.  Summer is a wonderful time of the year -- a time to enjoy nature, to go hiking, to relax by a stream and listen to the play of water on the rocks, or the wind rustling through the trees, or enjoy the beauty of wildlife.  The psalmist paints a beautiful picture of our hearts searching for God and God comforting our hearts using these images.

(verse of the week)
As the deer pants for streams of water,
So my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
For the living God.

Deep call to deep
In the roar of the waterfalls,
All your waves and breakers
Have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs His love,
At night his song is with me --
A prayer to the God of my life. Psalm 42,1,8

(prayer of the week)
Lord, we thank you that you have blessed us with all creation.  We look in awe at the works you have created and, like the psalmist, we are reminded that we too are” skillfully and wonderfully made.”  Help us to allow the deep thirst in our hearts to find its answer in your everlasting love and grace, for you are our Creator and Life, in Christ’s name we pray, amen.

Wishing you a great week!—Pastor TJ
