Refiner’s Fire

2/27/2025

Perhaps you have gone to Colonial Williamsburg or some other historical place and like me watched the blacksmith at work hammering next to the fires fanned by the hand-powered bellows.  In the workroom of the blacksmith the fires burn hot, and the sound of hammering echoes in the street.  The steel is softened and refined in fire, hammered into shape, then heated again, re-worked, and finally hardened in the shock of water and steam.  It seems a hard process from fire to hammer and anvil, and finally to the water vat; and yet the master craftsman knows his work.  A work of beauty and usefulness is created.  Peter likens God’s work in us to that of a master craftsman at work.  God fashions us and refines us with the fires of trial, but a work of beauty and faith is being crafted that will last the storms of life and reflect God’s love, giving “praise, glory, and honor” to Christ.  Know no matter how hot the fire, or how hard the hammer of adversity strikes, the water of the Holy Spirit will sustain you, for God is creating a work of enduring beauty and you are safe in God’s skillful care.  Your faith is more precious than the finest gold.  You are in the loving hands of the Divine Master Craftsman.

(Verse of the week)
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that you faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire---may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory, honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Peter 1.6,7)

 (Prayer of the week)
Gracious and loving God, thank you for the challenges of life that refine, mold and strengthen us.  Give me faith to trust in your plan and your strength.  Refine me that others may see your true reflection in me.  May I be joyful in all things, and may I be loving to all people, that others may see the light of your love in me.    Amen.

Blessings in Christ! –Pastor TJ

Deep Longing

2/20/2025

Most of us have a deep inner longing for God.  The trouble is we stay so busy in life that we are often not in touch with that yearning until we are forced into quiet solitude or loneliness or desperation by a crisis in life.  Then we feel the void that is there and the quiet tug of eternity on our heart.  But we can also quiet ourselves from the busyness of the world, of deadlines and demands-and simply listen for the still small voice of God.  Listen for a moment and feel the quiet whisper of God’s love in your heart; feel the steadfast strength of His grace encircling you.   Renew the hope in God’s love and grace and rekindle the song in your heart.

(Verse of the week)
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you,
O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
 for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
      day and night,
while others say to me all day long,
      “Where is your God?” . . .
Why are you downcast, O my soul?
      Why so disturbed within me?
    Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
      my Savior and my God.
Deep calls to deep
      in the roar of your waterfalls;
    all your waves and breakers
      have swept over me.
By day the LORD directs his love,
at night his song is with me-
a prayer to the God of my life.
Why are you downcast,
O my soul?
   Why so disturbed within me?
    Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
         my Savior and my God.
 (Psalm 42.1-11 selections)

(Prayer of the week)
Loving Heavenly Father, help me slow down from the busyness of life and quiet myself in your presence and love.  Fill me with your strength and grant me grace to face life with hope and joy.   And strengthened by your love, may I touch others with care and compassion.  May others see your love and grace in all I do.  May I be a blessing to others, through your power and to your glory. Amen.

Valentine Love Letter from God

2/13/2025

This week we celebrate Valentine’s Day, a special day to celebrate love.  Do you remember a time in your life when you received an envelope?  You knew it was from someone special, who cared about you.  You carefully opened the envelope and read every word.  There’s nothing like a love letter to get our heart going.  It brings a smile to our face.  It brightens our day.  It makes our heart quicken.  Christ is the living love letter from God.  The bible speaks of Jesus as God’s living logos, or Word.  God’s first and last word is love—Christ is far more than mere words, for He is the living expression of God’s love.  He embodied love in a way no other has.  John writes that the Word of God was from the beginning and came and dwelled among us.  In the ultimate expression of love, Christ gave his life that we might know forgiveness and new life, and most of all His great love.  And when our lives are touched by His love, we are forever changed.

(verse of the week)
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” (1 John 4:7–12 NIV11)

(prayer of the week)
Lord, help me to see again the great love you have for me.  Transform my life by your love.  May your love lead and guide me in all of life, and may my life reflect your love to all those around me, through your power and to your glory, amen.

Have a great week!—Pastor TJ
